Aromatic Description: Cistus has been used by humans for centuries, at least according to researchers who have discovered traces of cistus plants in prehistoric caves. We also know from religious texts that, among the ancient kings of Israel, cistus was one of the five sacred aromas of holy anointing. Many ancient peoples mixed cistus with myrrh and frankincense to make perfume and incense, and it has been used since the Middle Ages to treat wounds, ulcers, and other skin conditions. In Traditional Chinese Medicine, cistus is said to draw energy inward and break open stagnant states of mind, exposing core issues underlying a range of conditions.

Cistus not only has a long history of use, but an intriguing origin story as well. The legend goes that the healing properties of cistus were discovered thousands of years ago when shepherds worked to remove the gum of cistus plants from the coats of their grazing sheep and goats. After doing this, they noticed that where the gum had touched the cuts on their hands, their wounds healed quicker than normal.

Jumping ahead to the here and now, PureomEO’s™ Cistus Essential Oil begins with rich overtones of honey, and a herbaceous sweetness reminiscent of Frankincense. Lying just underneath this sweetness is a fresh, fragrant woodiness, and the musk of crushed flowers drying in sylvan sunlight. The oil ends on a dry, earthy note, while still retaining whispers of spicy florals and woodsy balsam. A few sniffs and it’s easy to understand why cistus was classified as a sacred anointing oil. It elevates and soothes, uplifts and calms, and makes everything feel a little more glorious.

Directions For Use: Add 5 to 6 drops of oil to bath water. Use in our PURE-OMA diffuser. Apply to pulse points, temples, behind the ears, or anywhere the body is holding tension. Oil can also be added to PureomEO™ carrier oils for use on skin.
